Abstract

In this paper, we explore the notion of user participation in context-aware applications and environments from a transdisciplinary perspective. A critical view on user participation within calm computing is discussed and some problems are identified. The reflection of these problems in current context-aware applications and environments are described. We propose a set of recommendations and possible realizations to overcome these problems and empower users in configuring and using these applications.

Author Biographies

Johan Criel, Alcatel-Lucent

Research Engineer R&I. He studied engineering in computer sciences at the university of Ghent. During his diploma work and at the Haute Ecole Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale (HEVS) in Switzerland, he worked on the topic of 'context aware applications'. Since 2005 he is researcher within the Shared Experiences team of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, Antwerp, Belgium.

Laurence Claeys, Alcatel-Lucent

Senior Researcher – Sociologist R&I. She is a sociologist and communication scientist. She received an M.A. in Sociology, an M.A. in Gender Studies and obtained a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences at the University of Ghent, in Belgium. She does research within the Shared Experiences team of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, Antwerp, Belgium.
