The Press from a Gender Perspective. Representations of women in journalistic speech on the International Day for WomenThe representation of women in journalistic speech has been debated in the academic setting. Several investigators sustain that the media are the central institution of the current configuration of the social system; therefore the way they build and describe ideologies is crucial in the definition of the female gender. The news coverage does not reproduce reality in all of its expressions, seeing as news are built according to selection and treatment practices. When it comes to female representation, the media continue to underplay those voices, translating to a selective and often negative speech, which justifies male domination. The public sphere is still associated with men, while women remain in the private domain. Also, they have the leading roles in news of human, aesthetic and emotional interest, as well as news about violence. We hear more and more about the feminization of the journalistic profession, and policies are created to promote equality, but the stereotypes and gender discrimination appear to still exist in the speech. Faced with this scenario, we intend to analyse how women are represented in journalistic speech on the International Day for Women. On this day, themes associated with the female sex are more easily included in the media agenda, but it matters to know what image is sent out by the media. ER -
