Abstract

Hip Hop culture in São Paulo (Brazil) and Lisbon (Portugal) is characterized as a social practice that enables greater visibility and assists in identity formation amongst the younger residents of impoverished urban neighbourhoods, often young blacks. Here the hip-hop helps to generate new understandings of self, reduces social stigma and as such, provides an effective tool in the fight against racism and other forms of discrimination and exclusion. How these individuals define and represent themselves socially? How do they define their representations and practices? What is the impact of such actions in local benefiting communities? The purpose of this work is focused how the young people in São Paulo and Lisbon appropriate of the hip-hop culture in them collective actions, which it will lead them to seek conceptual framework that could direct us to a critical reflection on issues of "belonging", "tradition", "rupture" and "continuity".
