Abstract

The Origins of the Hollywood’s Success. Analysis of the Structural and Historical Advantage of the US Film Industry The article is part of the studies that analyze the reasons of the Hollywood’s domination of the world’s movie screens. In particular, it considers the US domestic market’s features which gave to the national film industry a advantage over the foreign competitors for the control of the global market: a) the dimension and the composition of the domestic market; b) the use of a widely spread language; c) the industrial rise during the years in which Europe was a wars’ stage with a consequent block of the own film industries. These are three extra-cinematographic factors apart from strategic managerial decisions taken by the industry leaders. Thanks to this historical and economical approach, we can understand not only how Hollywood began his rise and his conquest of the domestic market and then of the foreign ones, but also how in the United States and in Europe two different film conceptions were born, respectively linked to the economic and artistic dimension of the cinematographic product.
